The most important thing I can do as an artist is to closely examine the world around me.
It's amazing what you see when you open your mind with the objective of pure enjoyment and learning.
Traditionally, a portrait has always been considered the capturing of the likeness and/or essence of a person.
I believe any subject on the canvas is a portrait. Inanimate objects,
as well as living things, hold memory imprints of truths and character.
They carry emotion, and have the ability to bring the viewer to a place of childhood
or a random event in time. A good portrait will always offer, at the least, a resemblance of familiarity.
The biggest challenge can be found in rendering those objects and living entities
in such a way that will allow the viewer to make that connection.
Jack is quite a cultured fellow. He
looks forward to new issues of
PoetsArtists magazine.
